Hunting in Maine - What’s the scoop?

Looking to hear some feedback from any Maine natives. I live in and am from Colorado but my wife is keen to move the family to Maine. I am an adult onset hunter but it has now become my number one passion outside family. I Love the steep country here in Colorado and the rest of the Rockies...

    CO Unit 43 - 2021

Hey everyone. Me and my hunting partner are thinking to hunt 43 for archery this year using the OTC antlerless tag. Although we're Colorado natives that's a unit we haven't hunted and one I haven't visited much. We gravitate to the steeper units and ones where there isn't much opportunity for...

    Turkey Poop

I am hoping some of you could give me some insight into aging turkey poop. Got out opening morning and got a few gobbles (which already made it a good day for me here along the front range in colorado) but seemed like he immediately headed in the other direction after fly down. Later on I found...

    New Mexico Barbary Sheep

Am I correct that the OTC tag is good for the entire year? That's a nice aspect if you're looking for some additional opportunity to fill out the year.

    30.06 Brass

I don't reload, as yet anyway, and have been saving my 30.06 brass. All of it has only been fired once - mixed stuff, Hornaday, Barnes, FG, R-P. If someone is in my area (Longmont CO) and wants it let me know otherwise buyer would pay shipping. I have 8.73lbs worth - .25cents a round.

Backstops and Safe shots in flat country

Right - a mile isn't all that far. In my case I'm shooting a Barnes 30.06 that has nearly 4' of drop at 500 Yards. So without a miss that is significantly above the target, which is say 3' above the ground, the bullet would come back down inside of 500 yards past the target - especially if...

Backstops and Safe shots in flat country

Okay these are good insights. What's you judgment on a scenario like this: Terrain is dead flat or nearly so for at least a couple miles. There's a animal within shooting distance but beyond the animal - say a mile past, is a no go zone such as a road, home, etc. In theory even a high miss...

Backstops and Safe shots in flat country

I have my first Pronghorn tag in Colorado this year about an hour and a half from where I live. The area is pretty flat and it has occurred to me that part of the challenge is not only to get a shot, but to get a safe shot. The area's not so big or desolate that one needed worry about where a...

    WTB - Nosler M48 Mountain Carbon .28

Oh that would be nice - Pendleton load development. I haven't dipped into hand loading as of yet but could see myself getting there down the road if I end up with more time - especially with the cost of .28 Nosler being more than 30.06 as I'm used to. My HOWA likes 180gr more than lighter...

    WTB - Nosler M48 Mountain Carbon .28

Actually I appreciate the response! I'll mostly be using it for elk, and hope to get some Pronghorn as well with it so I thought the .28 would be the right middle ground (in so far as that's possible with such differently sized animals), and am glad to hear you agree. I've been using a howa...

    WTB - Nosler M48 Mountain Carbon .28

If anyone is about to sell their M48 mountain carbon in .28 Nosler shoot me a message. I am looking to upgrade my hunting rifle and think I have settled on that one. Might go new but wanted to dip my foot in the used pool and see if there are any out there. If you have one but it’s not for...

    Backcountry hunting and extra ammo?

Alright - that’s a solid consensus - I will add another 6 or so rounds. Checking/re-zeroing a scope seems to me a reasonably likely what if too.

    Backcountry hunting and extra ammo?

Curious to hear how many rounds you guys take with you on a back country elk hunt without pack animals. How about just a day hunt? Considering the effort to get pack weight down I was thinking 4 rounds seemed reasonable but perhaps that’s not adequately taking into account possible what-if...

That’s exactly what the turkey took. Finding that spot that was a pain to get to - especially before sunrise!

    Colorado GMU 54

All, hoping to start up another Colorado gmu 54 thread For 2020. I think I have read most of the previous threads on 54 And have so far spent a decent amount of time e scouting and have some ideas Most threads from the last 4 years aren’t overly positive on the unit - hoping that’s to my...

    Adult onset hunter here

Hello all! Looks like a lot of knowledge on here that I hope to gain and hopefully give back eventually too. I am a Colorado native who grew up in the woods but didn’t have any exposure to hunting until I decided to take the hunters safety class with a friend about 5 years ago now. And since...
