The Season of Stupid (& elk)

“1. CLICK... this will haunt me for a bit. Can't tell you how many times I made sure that chamber was loaded when I shut the car door during 3rd season. I was not making that mistake again. A rookie move that luckily only cause me a bull... and not elk all together.” Like the lessons learned...

    Stranded in Colorado

Good listen, thanks for sharing. Good to be reminded how quickly things could turn south even for an experienced outdoors person.

    Starting Late in Life

I started with a similar background as you - zero experience and nobody to tell me what’s what. (I also didn’t read this forum for the first couple years of “hunting”). But I am very thankful I didn’t get wildly lucky and kill an elk out of the gate as the extreme challenge has been the thing...

    Best rifle options youth hunters

Cool, thanks for the info! Yeah I was thinking the full arca rail and planning for tripod shots with small shooters would be even more beneficial than it is for me too.

    Best rifle options youth hunters

I have been starting to think about this some as my oldest is now 7 and is small compared to his peers. I was thinking a chassis system could be the way to go since the length of pull could be made short and then increased as they grow and not replaced other than maybe the buttstock. (I am...

    EOY ‘23 - What Worked, What Didn’t?

Worked: Durston X -Mid 1 this year and was quite happy with it over the SG Sky Ult I had been using for several years. Bigger foot print but so much more livable! XLR element 4 chassis with folding stock. Really liked having the full length arca and it packed around so nice with the folding...

    Yukon Dream fulfilled, in pictures.

Very cool and congratulations! I drove to and from Alaska with 4 friends when I was 19 on a month long road trip. The Yukon was my favorite section and I have been wanting to return ever since. I wasn’t a hunter then but the idea now of going back there to hunt is very appealing!

    Suppressor Experience

Yeah I think you would be able to.

    Suppressor Experience

Using a 180g Hammer Hunter with 61.8 grains of H4350 and CCI magnum primers I have been getting about 2865 MV at fairly cold temps (upper 30s) I haven’t messed with too many options yet though.

    Suppressor Experience

I am using a Thunder Beast Ultra 5 on a 20” 300WSM and would not want to go back to hunting without a can. For me it was all about having it for hunting. I don’t like shooting at all with the full recoil of no brake - adding the brake changes poi so taking that off just for hunting is a no...

    Big toe injury

I had something kinda similar happen after a hunt a few years ago - the outside of my right foot was numb to the touch. Not noticeable unless I was bare foot and touched it. A good PT thought it was as from my tightly laced boot rubbing on a a specific nerve pathway at the front of in my ankle...

    Hunt recap - first elk

I did recover one bullet (I think the first shot) in between the chest lower and front left leg/shoulder - it had shed all its petals. I also recovered one petal in the inner portion of the front shoulder. I have been hunting exclusively with monolithic cooper since I started (small kids and...

    Hunt recap - first elk

Thanks - it was definitely a good reminder to take my time and move carefully! (I knew there was ice in this spot too, but it just took me down so fast).

Glad you all enjoyed it. After having really enjoyed other’s hunt recaps/stories here I thought I should share as well.
