Probably the mountain goat that my son shot in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Hiked in at least ten miles. Spotted goats about 3,000 feet above us. Hiked up and he shot one late in the evening, too late to finish skining the goat Had to go back down to our camp, then back up the next morning...
There are lots of reasons why the number of people applying has increased. First, more people have moved to Montana, and it appears that a high percentage of them hunt. Hunting has been made more popular, due to the internet and TV hunting shows. There has been a push to get more people into...
Not so easy to turn them in. Usually I run into them miles away from cell service. They are on dirt bikes with helmets, or 4 wheelers, or other off road vehicles. And even if you do manage to see a license plate they are long gone before you could turn them in.
Nothing for me. I guess that just means that my scouting and hunting adventures will have to focused on elk and deer again. Truth is that there aren't even enough hours in a day, days in a week, to do all the outdoor things I already can do, and I'm retired.
If you've ever been barely getting by, you'll realize that there is a difference between paying for a once in a lifetime chance to hunt moose, versus loaning the state money for a couple of months that you could definitely use for food or rent.
Of course times have changed from the 80s, when I...
I've been applying for moose for almost 40 years, except for a few when I couldn't afford the $50 fee to apply. I'm not for raising the up front fee, even if it does help my odds of finally getting a moose. Seems wrong to pick on the people who can least afford it, it's almost as despicable as...
I would tend to agree with you that Democrats in Montana are their own worst enemy, probably nationally also. However, surely the Republicans in Montana can do much better also? Can't they find someone from Montana, with actual Montana values to represent them? Matt Rosendale, Steve Daines...
In the past, Montana has indeed many times voted for Blue Governors. That is the past though. The vast majority of the tens of thousands of people who have moved to this state in recent years are never going to vote for a Democrat.
I'm a Montana resident and have been applying for moose for about 40 years, never have drawn a moose license. I have maximum bonus points, and my odds of drawing are still slim, in all units. So I'd say that the odds of a non resident drawing are probably not good.
If you said you lost your elk tag, and FWP allowed you to buy a replacement tag, can you now shoot 2 elk? Would the judge be sympathetic because the system allowed you to buy a second tag?
The regulations are the law.
I agree. Just because there is a flaw in the system that allows you to buy the license, doesn't change the fact that you're breaking the rules. If you buy any license, it comes with limitations and rules on how you can use it.
Might not be as good a unit as it used to be, but is anywhere as good as it used to be? I'm looking forward to spending time this summer and fall checking the unit out, and helping my friend who drew the permit. I wouldn't want to be holding out hope waiting on any unit getting better, too...
A hunting partner told me he was thinking of not applying for an elk permit, and just buying a point. I suggested him putting in for unit 380, as it's the same thing as buying a point. Looks like I'll be spending a lot of time in the Elkhorns this year. 😀
The winter of 96/97 was probably the worst for wildlife in NW Montana that I remember. Huge amounts of snow at the start of hunting season, resulted in a lot of deer being killed right of roads. The following year, it seemed that only small bucks survived. However, I read that it wasn't that...
Great story. I especially like the part where you were calculating how much damage you would do to yourself by crashing the truck into the Virgin River.
