That photo was nowhere near the Slippery Ann viewing area. He was camped on the south side of the river much further east. He bowhunts, but was working and had no permit for the area anyway. Another hunter was camped beside him, but was gone before light looking elk elsewhere. 😀
I've never hunted the Missouri Breaks, neither has my son. My son camped over there last September and this guy was bugling outside his tent in the morning. So they aren't all tiny.
I've bowhunted for elk in West and SW Montana for over 30 years. The changes have been significant, especially in the last 10 years. I may hunt some of the same areas that you do. First it was the fires, mostly starting around 2000. Then it was a gradual increase in bowhunter numbers...
I've been out in the dark with elk bugling all around, when from miles away I hear someone's big manly diesel truck approaching. Of course, the elk hear the loud trucks approaching too. A hybrid Maverick, might be the ultimate hunting rig, going slow with the quiet electric motor. Ha!
I already ordered one. I ordered it back in October, and I'll be lucky if I get it this year. My son ordered one back in July, and should get it in a few weeks. I already own a Tundra, but for 90% of what I use it for I could use a Maverick. As far as hunting with it goes, I killed my first...
The two biggest elk I killed were the two years after I retired. A guy asked me what my secret was. No real secret, I had all summer to find them, and every day of season to hunt them.
If you only want to hunt Montana every 3rd year then your plan probably works. However, if you want to hunt more frequently than that then it looks like buying preference points gives you good odds of drawing every 2nd year, and not buying them will give you good odds every year. If I was a...
I sent an e.mail to FWP this week about what I see as an issue with preference points. Last year over 70% of the people with zero points drew, but only 40% with one point did. So this year, even the people with 2 points will only have about a 90% chance of drawing, those with 1 point will have...
I prefer the topper over a tent when in grizzly bear country, it allows me to sleep better. Another advantage is when there is a windstorm at night, you don't have to worry about your tent blowing away. It does require a bit of organization, keeping your belongings in containers, and moving a...
My son and I are bowhunting elk and have been following a herd and herd bull all morning. Bugling back and forward but just following, not catching up. We lose them. Then we hear the clanking of antlers, and my son says "they're fighting". We hurry towards the sound in the recently burned...
I managed sawmills for 20 years, and had to survive through all the downturns in the housing market. There are always cycles, and homebuilding will slow down. Personally, I feel like this cycle will start running out of steam this year, and then really tank by next year. Now is not a good...
There are areas that I hunted each year starting over 30 years ago. I covered a lot of ground each year, saw lots of elk, but rarely a mule deer. Over the years the mule deer numbers increased significantly, and that was despite lots of wolves showing up. The difference, I think, was habitat...
I totally agree with what you are saying. It has to add pressure to the former 900 units, unless they give out fewer permits, which then decreases the draw odds.
The bundling together of units like the Sweetgrass hills, and the Custer National forest never made any sense. I was always under...
Surely you understand that the pressure and hunting days must increase on the permit units. Everyone who gets a permit must hunt there, no no-shows, no hunting for a day or two, all permit holders fully committed.
So your logic must be that it relieves pressure on the general units, the whole...
Thanks for the response. This year the unit I planned to hunt was shut down all of September due to forest fires. It was lucky I could still bounce around and go elsewhere.
