Earlier this week, I pulled it off. I secured buck pronghorn tags for both myself and my Dad in his preferred hunt area. For this year. It's an area where a hunt can be had for the right amount of money. However, it takes the right amount of money and a cancellation to book one on such...
I owe my love for hunting to my dad and my grandfather. I drafted some of this post this afternoon while Dad was sitting a few yards away from me, napping under our favorite dove hunting tree. I've been hooked ever since Dad took me hunting as a boy. Grandpa joined us for many adventures as...
I turned in my Utah antlerless application. I had a small chance at a cow elk tag and another small chance at a doe pronghorn tag.
Shortly after the Utah antlerless application period closed, I received an email informing me that I'd drawn an archery pronghorn tag in a pretty good unit in the...
For those of you who don't know me, you can refer to my two-part sheep hunting story last year if you want a flavor for my style, and what this thread might turn into.

Made it out for the opener on Monday. Not great "dove" weather, but pretty awesome "sit under a tree and stare at the sky" weather.
Dad and I each managed a few. No complaints.
On those hunts when I get up really early (early enough that the dinner menu is still an option), I always grab a Big Mac and eat it on the drive up. There's something about a Big Mac at 3:00 AM that adds one more layer to the total insanity of the activity.
I volunteer at the local ice rink. Lots of stuff going on there and lots of help needed (ice sports are expensive as-is, and would be untenable for most without significant volunteer efforts keeping costs lower). It's been a great way to meet people and do something good for the next generation.
The sun has set on this adventure, without a hero shot or much more excitement to report.
I switched areas and tried some spot and stalk hunting, to no avail. The animals were more spooky than I expected they'd be. The big bucks were running as soon as I parked the truck. I guess there's a...
In a blind for the evening. I have two mature bucks about 400 yards out. One could be the one I missed yesterday (if so, I hope he has short term memory issues). The other is new and bigger. We'll see if they get over here.
My chosen hiding spot is a rare shady spot in an enormous desert. Not a bad place to wait, if one must. The waiting game continued for a few hours. Lie down. Close eyes. Rest. Sit up, check and see if the antelope are still bedded. Repeat. Here was my view for much of the afternoon, as I stared...
Morning was a bust. Slipped into my chosen hiding spot bright and early and didn't see anything all morning except a bunch of coyotes (which may have explained the lack of antelope). Went back to town for lunch and a nap, spotted a few herds on the way back but none that would facilitate a...
Not much for photos today. I did end up driving right past a herd with a few nice bucks near sunset. They were in a fantastic spot, and I felt it best to just blow on by so I wouldn't spook them off. I've got what I think is a pretty good plan in place for tomorrow morning.
8 points as a NR.
The draw stats are up on the SD website if you want a deeper look. At my point level, my odds were roughly 6 - 7%. By far the luckiest big game draw I've ever had.
I drew non-trophy bison as well and would also appreciate any tips to help me plan the logistics of the trip. I live about 10 hours away from the park. Recommendations on transporters, butchers, tanners, etc. would be much appreciated (I haven't yet decided whether I want lots of professional...
