I also appreciate the survey cost analysis PDF provided by @MsMuley. I read the whole damn thing and now know why Montana has no hope for change. As you stated, it's 2022 and the internet and electronic data collection is now ""THE THING""!
But when the excuse to not implement mandatory...
My personal preference, MADE IN THE USA, but I own good Euro and Japan optics also.
Anything that states "MADE IN CHINA" gets a hard pass lifetime warranted or not.
Honest question, do you think that the mono makes that much of a difference in lost meat while shattering shoulder bone?
I ask this because I am truly interested in your real life observations using a mono. I have never personally killed an animal with a mono bullet. Been packing mono...
Good post @JLS.
While I agree that taking out the front shoulder is needed, on a few of your examples, I would personally wait for a broadside or quartering away opportunity.
Agree with @buffybr, been there, done that. The front shoulder is a mess and meat is lost.
Excellent all the way around! 👍
I really enjoyed your post and pics. Congrats on getting it done the hard way.
Now I will be dreaming of percussion cracks, the boom followed by a billow of smoke all night!
Thank you for that....
Well?? I didn't participate in the above poll but will answer @rogerthat 's question.
Yes, I will be hunting every day of the second annual "Heritage" season. But this year will be a private land only hunt! I plan on setting up camp on Friday and enjoying a week of solitude that the hunt will...
Good Luck with your ID whitetail quest.
I like your daughter's elk attitude!
Hope that the meat processing went well and expect to see a pic of a whitie with it's tongue hanging out.
Talking hunting with a Warden last week and I asked him his views on the hunting in Montana. He stated that the hunter numbers have out paced the available lands that are open to hunting. I asked him about the deer numbers? He felt that the numbers where down a bit in total and really down on...
Oh believe me.....I know! Sad doesn't even begin to describe what has been happening and not just Region-1. Region-1 has just taken the biggest hit over the last few decades. With it's vast publicly accessible lands and rugged backcountry, the FWPs will just tell you to lace up your boots...
I believe that you are spot-on! But as you stated, lions will scavenge on fairly fresh carcasses. I've had to spook a lion off, and retrieve, a meat bag that it stole while packing out elk. I had a lion start eating on a mule deer buck that I had shot and tagged. Did not see that one but was...
@Irishamn,
I agree that Region-1's "PRIVATE" elk numbers have grown over the last few decades.....BUT, I will whole heatedly disagree that there are as many elk as there once was. Region-1, with it's vast publicly accessible lands, needs our FWPs HELP! At what point does this happen, IF EVER...
