Montanans how long since your last mule deer

Uh 3 days ago for me - I had my 10 year old son with me and wanted him to see some success.

Is 'Useful electric snow blower" an oxymoron?

When I lived in Cleveland, my neighbor picked up a cheap (like $50) electric snowblower in the local classifieds. The battery life wasn't great, but I was definitely jealous when I was shoveling snow all the time. First winter in Billings last year wasn't bad - may eventually pick up a...

    Montana mule deer rut activity

Went out yesterday and saw several groups of does - few small spikes here and there and no decent bucks to be seen. A friend called me this afternoon and said he had some bucks rutting in his pasture. Drove out and shot a buck with my son. Weird what 24 hour’s difference makes.

    Tailgate Pics

I was rear ended a couple months ago and just got a brand new tailgate and bumper two days ago. Figured I better break it in right.

    Montana mule deer rut activity

Went out Friday afternoon - saw a couple of groups of does, but no bucks with them. Around 10 min of light left, spotted a 2 pt with a doe... he was not able to leave her any time soon. Hoping it'll be in full swing next Fri.

300 Blackout Bolt action, suppressed. Good short range stand gun for my wife/kid?

Ah gotcha. I still just shoot for the vitals. With regular projectiles, expansion will be minimal (if any at all). With projectiles designed for subsonic use, like a Maker, Lehigh, Hornady SubX, etc, the expansion is pretty impressive. I didn't find my projectile as it was a complete pass...

300 Blackout Bolt action, suppressed. Good short range stand gun for my wife/kid?

I've seen that mentioned several times regarding hunting with subsonics - some guys prefer to keep shots 50 and in, but I think with enough practice and if you know the ballistics, then 100 or 150 yards is fine. I think the underlying premise of treating like archery is the trajectory. These...

300 Blackout Bolt action, suppressed. Good short range stand gun for my wife/kid?

Yep, and that would most likely be my max. I shot a doe at 125 with a 200 gr maker subsonic a couple of weeks back. If you know your ballistics, it’s fine. Obviously, I’d prefer closer if given the chance.

I’m assuming you’re planning on shooting subs? Otherwise, supersonic ammo still has a crack. 300 BLK is a great option for kids, especially if shots are 150 or less.

I shouldn’t be looking at guns.

Looks like it worked out great!

    suppressor length on hunting rifle

Here’s an 11” TBAC 338 Ultra on a 338 RUM with 30” barrel. It’s obviously not a timber gun haha. For the rest of my hunting, I usually have my Gunwerks 8” suppressor on my rifles from 18”-26” barrels. The TBAC Dominus is a good option that’s slightly shorter, but has a larger diameter than...

    22-250 AI powders

Barrels are consumables - torch it having fun and slap another on it. In my 22-250 AI, I stuck to heavies with RL-23. In my 22 Creed, I used Varget and pushed the 62 gr ELDVT to 3650 out of my 22” barrel.

    Bullet Failure?

Clearly the bullet killed the animal, but it definitely failed to expand. My experience with monos have been fine - used some Barnes 145 LRX for a bull elk and two whitetail bucks this season. At $25/box on clearance this summer, they were a much cheaper option than Hammers (even though I had...

    Cutting a barrel down

Go 18-20”. Majority of my rifles have this barrel length. The 338 RUM stays at 30” haha
