When in the field, I used the Merlin app on my phone.
It can ID calls or songs of birds in North America.
I often use Merlin to decide whether I should sit and wait because a species I want to photograph is calling.
I use both. I use Gaia 95% of the time, ONX 5% of the time.
I like that Gaia has hierarchical folder so I store waypoints in a folder structure like: hunting/2024/pheasants/MT
I like the high resolution imagery in Gaia and ability to label waypoints such as "Flushed rooster 1-Nov-2023".

I was impressed how well the RF 100-400mm lens did at relatively low light.
These were taken last night at sunset looking to the west in our MT pasture.
F/8, ISO6400, 1/500 sec
Went on a 10-mile "dike hike" at the local refuge this morning.
The new camera has tracking and eye detection which is great for birds in flight.
I had 2 attempts, a golden eye at 1/500 sec and a gadwall at 1/1250 sec.
Both with my RF 100-400mm lens.
I agree.
I wear them most days unless it is hot, then shorts.
I like the polarfleece lined for went I split wood up in Alaska during the winter.
Or under rain paints in a cold rain.
Quick drying, most have lasted a few years until a zipper fails.
For years I took photos with a $300 (used bridge camera). After moving from Alaska and settling in Montana, I found myself out taking photos about 6 times per week. So I finally bought a "real camera" a Canon R7.
Yesterday I went out for a coupe hours with a RF 800mm F/11 lens.
The lens cost...
Last year some sports pundits proclaimed the Nuggets as a 3-5 year dynasty,
this year it is the Celtics.
Last NBA team to win back-to-back championships was the Warriors in 2018.
Before that it was the Lakers in 1987,1988.
There are so many good, young teams that can peak at the right time to...
I used an inReach SE (yellow) for over a decade in Alaska and I was always impressed with the life of the battery.
I forgot to take it when we moved down to Montana for the winter, so I bought an InReach Mini which I like
because it was so much more compact.
In Alaska we used the InReach...
My dad was a world war II vet. He was one of the happiest people I've ever known.
He lived a happy life and passed at the age of 96.
The thing I remember most about him was how proud he was of all his children
and how encouraging he was.
He would often wait and let me figure things out.
He...
