Anyone give up hunting other species after getting your dog?

I am retired and living the dream. At age 67, solo hunting with the labs from Sept to mid January helps keep me fit.

Anyone give up hunting other species after getting your dog?

When I moved from Alaska to Montana, I gave up big game hunting. 30 years of big game hunting in Alaska was enough for me. Now I get to bird hunt most mornings from Sept to mid January. Retired and living the dream. Photo from this morning's hunt. Wet dog and wet rooster.

    Crops and their Contents

From last week rooster pheasants. The first is what I expect (peas). The second is what I normally see in winter ruffed grouse (aspen buds). Both roosters had lots of fat reserves.

    Is the market overvalued?

For the past eight quarters, Berkshire Hathaway has been a net seller of equities, raking in $166 billion by off-loading massive amounts of stock, including longtime favorites, like Apple and Bank of America. The scale of these sales is unprecedented, as it's the first time since 2018 that...

    Tariffs and Potential Inflation

Most economic analysis I've read concluded that broad import tariffs can increase inflation. There are 2 potential reasons: 1) Most goods consumers purchase in Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc. are imported. Tariffs on these goods would be passed from the US importer to the...

    Cattail roosters

Had a good hunt yesterday on roosters in cattails. I think the rain overnight helped as close flushes at sunrise with the lab working the edge of cattails. I silently position myself way in front of the lab crashing through cattails. Rain and cloudy days seem to work best for us.

    Dog photos: 3 easy objectives

    Why I love labs

Another thing I like about labs is their oily coat makes cleanup from houndstongue easy. A quick swim and most are gone. For me, I just shed a cheap pair of Frog Toggs pants. Then we are ready to head home. Before: After:

    Relocation For High Three Retirement

I don't know about the real estate market in Anchorage, but Fairbanks has always been a sellers market. Prices in Fairbanks are lower than most suburban areas in Montana. We sold our 3 bedroom/2 bath with a 40 X 30 2-story heated shop and 2.5 acres on top of a ridge for $450k. Sold in less...

    Roth conversion and RMD

I am five years off from age 73 and RMD which would be high due to a large 401k. My mom died this past year at age 102 and the plan is to use the inheritance for a Roth Conversion. That would reduce my tax liability in later years when RMD kicks in and some tax free inheritance when we die...

    Relocation For High Three Retirement

I lived in Fairbanks for over 30 years before retiring to Montana. Anchorage is like most big cities. It reminds me of Salt Lake City with a big airport, salt water to the west, urban sprawl north and south with mountains to the east. At that high latitude, the sun is low in the sky, so for...
