Elk are tough and so are Alaskan moose. My first moose I shot 4 times at about 75 yards right in the "pocket" and it never even flinched. I hunted with a 338 with 225 gr. I have never had an elk that was difficult to kill but I have been lucky. Every year I use to find elk that had gotten away...
A big factor is ...did you hit a rib ? If the bullet goes between there usually a lot less damage and thus a slower result. Shot angle is also very critical.
Hunted NW Kansas and only saw a total of nine birds in three days. Five years ago we would see 100 or more. Bone dry. Farmer told me he was 2,000 bales short of his normal year and the price was @$250 a ton.. The flood 4-5 years ago really took a toll on birds and deer. We had 6 game cameras...
Some hunters are reporting unusual numbers of wasp & mice this year. WASP: fill a pan/dish with 3"-4" of water , add a few drops of dish soap and suspend a chuck of meat about a foot or so above this. You will have to empty this and re-supply fairly often as it will fill up with dead wasp. MICE...
To my big surprise it might be that the Vail-Aspen-Gunnison area may get them first. They voted for them now they may get them.. There is a good article in the Grand Junction Daily Sentinel today concerning this."Momma don't let your poodle grow up to be wolf food " is my new song.
BE warned...............elk hunting is hard.........really hard if you want to be successful consistently. Suggest watching Kara & Marcus's hunt on Fresh Tracks. I took 32 elk in my hunting days and 3-4 were kind of easy the rest were darn hard.
The best filet knife I have ever used was...............a bread knife I bought for my wife. It is a high-end knife from Williams-Sonoma. I used it on some King Salmon.
Suggest you talk with your outfitter. I have had to stay overnight because of BC customs just dragging their feet ) 6 hours). Just happen to get anti-hunters at customs. It can govern smooth but it can also be a horrific pain in the a$$. I have done this trip probably 10-11 times.
A six year old boy died a few days ago down by Colorado Springs from rattler bite. He was out for a walk with his dad. It took him a couple of days to pass. There a lot of rattlers along the front range of Colorado as well as the Northwest part of the state. I really do not like...
I am nearly 80 years old...thus the name. I have had an incredible life and completed my bucket list...except... I never took the time to get my Stones sheep. Got my first deer @13 and my first elk @ 14. Been blessed to hunt Africa (several times but did not enjoy it so the last trips were just...
Wonder how the hunters that paid a 50% deposit with Jim Shocky ever made out. He was taking the position that they should be willing to donate their "discretionary income" to him so he could maintain his complete operation with out returning anything or carrying it forward or maintaining his...
I hunted Kansas with my two sons for three days this year. Bird numbers are down some but we still got our two bird limits....however: My trail cameras showed a hoard of raccoons and a few possum. The rancher told me that he had a trapper come in to thin the coyotes out as they were trying to...
