Hello all,
I have been listening to a lot of podcasts lately about applying for tags. I have not heard too much about what the overall cost is to apply in all these different states. I know the costs vary greatly whether you draw the tag or not. Some states have nonrefundable licenses and was...
Federal Heavyweight Turkey load through an extended goose/waterfowl choke. Using the extended range waterfowl choke is more versatile then a lead only choke.
The Trophy Bonded Tip is one of the better lead bullets on the market (Swift A-frames and Sirocco are the others). Shooting both ballistic gel and water, the bullet will typically have 90-98% weight retention. If the bullet hit a shoulder or bone it might lose more. Below are pictures from a 130...
I took the First Lite Kanab 2.0 merino pants to Idaho this month. On day 5, I crab-walked/butt slid down a grass hill for 30 yards. At the end of the stalk there was a hole about the length of a pen in the seat of the pants. The pants did not tear, but simply wore through the material. First...
Welcome, I grew up hunting in the Finger Lakes Area. I didn't realize we had a National Forest until I left to work out west.

2000 fps is the minimum I recommend when using Barnes TSX/TTSX, Hornady GMX, Nosler E-Tip.
When using Cutting Edge Bullets, Cavity Back or Hammer Bullet, you can go down to 1600 fps.
I believe the author in this study was using "common" nonlead bullets (barnes TSX, Hornady GMX) at long range. As you mentioned earlier, these types of bullets need at least 2000fps to expand. In a .30/06 type of caliber that threshold is typically reached around 400 yards. Later in the study he...
Hello,
I am the Nonlead Ammunition Outreach Coordinator for California. You may still use lead shot for quail, dove and snipe until July 1, 2019 unless on CADFW managed lands. If you are hunting on a licensed game bird club you can use lead shot for all game birds.
If hunting with a shotgun...
I would recommend starting with the 80 grain Hornady GMX bullet. If your gun already likes Hornady it would be a good place to start. You will sacrifice .05 BC but if you're shooting under 500 yards you will not notice the difference. A 80 grain bullet may seem light but it will have near 100%...
Having tested the Barnes TTSX and TSX quite a bit at those ranges, I would recommend a minimum velocity of 2000fps. Using a 270 Winchester firing 130 TSX into water at 100-400 yards the expansion drops considerably around 2100-1900fps. This goes for most non-lead bullets like the TTSX, E-tip and...
Finished ladder testing with my 280AI shooting Barnes LRX 145 grain. The shots were taken at 250 yards. I'm leaning towards the #10 load (54.3gn). My question is "during ladder testing why is horizontal shot string more important than vertical shot string." Since I'm using non-lead bullets, I...
I own the Kimber Hunter in 280AI. For $800 you get a match grade barrel, trigger and chamber. The stock is better than any other $800 rifle. That being said, the main reason I bought the Kimber is you will not find a rifle under $1500 chambered in 280AI. Which is arguably the most versatile...
The Fusion is a bonded bullet so there is less chance of jacket separation. The Interlock is a straight forward cup and core bullet. In my personal experience the interlocks lose roughly 40-50% of its mass and the fusions lose approx. 10-20%.
Happy Hunting
The eld-x is designed for long range use. If most of your shots are under 400 yards I would recommend a bullet that holds together better (bonded lead or non-lead). If you are shooting over 400 yards, then the eld-x MAY hold together and reach the vitals. My advice would be to use a bonded or...
I really like the Hunter, the stock feels better than any other synthetic in the $800 price range. Try not to compare the Hunter stock vs the Montana or Ascent. Once you compare the Hunter stock vs Winchester, Remington or Savage the Hunter wins every time IMO.
I thought the molded trigger...
Thanks for the replies,
My reasoning for leaving out lapua is they do not offer a factory loaded nonlead round. They would be my first choice if they did, and this poll would of not existed.
My theory for fireforming factory loads is knowing where a specific .280 Remington cartridge shoots in...
Hello Gents,
Wanted to ask the reloading group what their preferred brass is from the list below:
Nosler
Winchester
Hornady
Norma
Purposely leaving out Lapua bc I am fireforming factory loaded .280 Remington copper bullets into .280AI
thanks,
Hello,
As the Nonlead Ammunition Coordinator for California, I can give you some options that are not well known...
Cutting Edge Bullets has a vast selection of copper bullets to choose from (including the 140grain). As earlier posts have mentioned, you should start out with a 120 grain first...
I went through this same dilemma...I chose the Kimber Hunter in 280 Ackley Improved shooting 150 grain Nosler E-Tips. The biggest complaint you will hear about this cartridge, is you have to hand load to achieve its full potential. But I would argue if someone is wanting the best options for...
