The main hunt I have planned this year is a black bear hunt in California. After checking some CA based taxidermy shops, the price to tan a hide seems expensive.
I was wondering if anyone here has shipped their raw hides to a commercial tannery. I am looking to just tan the hide without the...
Used the 145gr LRX in a 280AI for a few animals this year..Elk at 300 yards that passed through both shoulders, a pig at 330 yards that went through the spine and shoulder and a WT deer at 40 yards through both shoulders.
I've tested both the LRX and TTSX in ballistic gel out to 400 yards and...
Guaranteed hunts:

Pig Hunt in CA
Blacktail in CA
>75% chance:
Rifle Mule deer in NV
Long Shots:
AZ mule deer and elk
NV, NM elk
Sheep in CA, AZ, NV, NM
Nice shot on the mule deer!!
Very cool to recover the bullet and see the performance.
I was able to harvest a bull at 300 yds using a 145gr Barnes LRX from a 280 Ackley. The hole was approximately double the diameter through the shoulder and passed through.
E-tips, TTSX, TSX and GMX are swaged which means they are a harder copper than Hammer and Cutting Edge. Hammer and Cutting Edge are made on a CNC machine which means they can use a softer copper.
E-tips, TTSX, etc. need at least 1900fps to reliably expand....the CNC machined bullets will "open"...
Agree with the above posts....whatever grain weight you decide on, make sure that the minimum impact velocity is above 1900fps.
I would try the 140gr TTSX first then move down to the 120gr.
Good Luck
Moved to Ventura when I first got to CA and was in your situation..you should look into spearfishing. San Diego has some great opportunities and its a cross between fishing and hunting. Plus you have to be on the look out for Great Whites and sea lions. fun fun

Hello All,
I drew the second rifle tag in New Mexico this year. I have talked to the game warden and he has given me some advice on where to start. Using OnXmaps, I've located some public access and water sources away from the roads. I have about 7 spots picked out. My question is "what...
Here is a test I did a few years ago with various bullets, including the Berger VLD hunting bullet. I shot from 100 to 400 yards at water jugs using a 130grain bullet from a 270 WIN. The cutting edge bullet was a 115 grain.

hope it helps...
I would try the Federal Power-Shok Copper HP also...perform the same as the higher priced TSX, A-Frame, Trophy Coppers but half the price. Could mean more time at the range.
Drew my first rifle bull tag in New Mexico . I've heard its been a dry winter and water is very limited. The unit has very little public land access also.
My question is: How far will elk travel for water? Ive been locating water sources in the area via Google, but dont know how far away I...
I read your question fairly quick so I might not understand your problem but I wouldnt jump to the conclusion that copper fouling is the problem. Individual rifles prefer their own bullet. Even rifles that are from the same manufacturer and one serial number off can shoot differently. If youre...
The common advice is to clean your rifle when you notice the groups starting to "open up". The test rifles I use get a spray cleaner and a few passes with a bore snake after each use. Once a year I will clean them thoroughly with cleaning rods, toothbrushes, etc.
Velocity requirements for...
I have shot plenty of lead and nonlead bullets into ballistic gel to test expansion and wound channel. The tipped nonlead bullets open a fraction of an inch faster but both bullet styles begin to expand within the first 1.5 inches. It should be noted that lead bullets also take about 1.5 inches...
