I know I’m getting old when I keep thinking about the positives if I don’t draw. I will avoid the inevitable Achilles pain. The bigger positive of drawing is more burning my points than going on the hunt 🤔. Tired of the points treadmill. Look forward to burning more next year.
Can you strap a 6 hp Mercury on there? It's a little dicey 3 mile trek in the dark. One of my personal barrier-to-entry rules is to not hunt anywhere a guy would take a kayak. So usually minimum 2 miles from any boat launches. I use a 10' folding plastic Port-a-Bote that displaces just 4" of...
Just had a newbie smart enough to pick up the phone and call me last week. Educated him on the reality of ground floor entry in the UT & NV systems, including what .001 odds look like. He studied the odds and wisely opted to save his coin for his family. I steered him in more productive directions.
Not hardly 😀. I’m at the top of the Utah points pyramid and decided this was the year to make my personal dream come true by cashing my 27 deer points for the Paunsagunt. I’ll be eating just fine ☺️. I planned ahead and now have points saved in preference based systems the next 5 years. Just...
From what I’ve observed, the premium tags were out of reach to newbies ~15 years ago. And since then, I’ve watched what I consider mediocre tags drift into the abyss. So I shifted gears to low tier & general tags this year, but I still have been unable to draw. The future is bleak indeed for...
I was fortunate to jump in back about the time you & Randy did ~ 1996, pre-internet info highway, and went on many of the best trophy hunts in the US. Way more than my share. Currently managing 445 points spread over ten states. I have exited quite a few (WY S&M, OR, ID, MT, KS & NH) and the...
The wife & I are in NW Indiana so Bears fans. I have to trust Ryan Poles on this one. Interested to see if this pans out. Standards are low here and I have no expectations. Both trenches were improved last year, tho Oline was injured but played well when they all returned.
Great Unit 8 Maine moose. Saw it in the moose thread. I added 8, 9 & 14 to my application this year to fill all the boxes. Had not previously as my buddy was not familiar with these. I’m a NR max point holder but know I’ll likely never draw. Did draw NH Unit 1 in 2012 and scored a nice 53 1/2”...
Same as it ever was. But that’s why I set up my long term plan the way it is. Always reserve one preference based tag/year so I don’t have to depend on luck. This year Utah deer OIL.
Hi Peter, Glad to help. I typed a long response bu then got a warning to limit the length of PM's to 400 characters or something. Please just email me. I cut and saved my response so I can email it to you.

Totally agree. However, I can tell you the odds for my unit 45 archery flipped from 90% to 10% the year of the welfare legislation, and only got worse. It was very significant. NR tags dropped what?…..from 16% to 6%? Been a while I forgot the exact numbers. Since then the blind masses have...
Yes, before the outfitter welfare legislation I drew my first 6 consecutive years, including the Valle Vidal, units 49, 52 & 45. The archery odds were ~90% those years. My how things have changed. I've not drawn any of these archery hunts since 2011. 0 fer eleven, even via the guided pool...
I’ve been hunting NM since my first Western trip back in 1996. Over the years, I’ve watched the odds for my favorite unit drop gradually from 90% to this year’s all time low 2%. This is definitely not a trophy class unit. Strictly mid/low-tier. Three other low-tier units I hunted over the...
