Okie, Yes, 2% for any sheep tag was pre-internet around 1996. Today it’s much more like 1/100th of 1% unless you got 25 points in NV or AZ which will get you in the 1% range. However, due to the masses your odds still decline each year despite accumulating another point.
The other option is...
Hard to believe, huh? Yes it’s a cool area esp. on top in August/Sept, but hardly an OIL hunt. I’m up to 9 now w/loyalty & HE, but no way I’m waiting to 14+ to burn 😯. Perfect example of the sheer madness caused by rampant social media.
This makes me cherish the 5 remaining...
Ya the Kaibab archery deer tag has been on point steroids fer sure of late. Hell it’s a mirror of WY region G now. From 1 point to 14 overnight! No question both are now grossly over-valued. I will be researching to burn my points in both states elsewhere in some unpublished units for a far...
One positive about burning my CO elk points is I can now put that state strictly in the category of opportunity hunts, along with WY. That’s a change for me as most my previous experience has been in trophy units. Drawing glory tags is fading into a thing of the past anyway. I ran into no less...
Ya I doubt you need to worry about that 🤔. Even at max NR points the odds are likely well below 1%. After drawing NH in 2012, I just look at Maine as playin with house money.
Just getting to see ~390 & ~400 bulls was a lifetime memory I won’t forget. And going in to that hunt my goal was 350+, which I made by 2/8” lol. I did not wound anything. So I was never disappointed in my decision.
In 29 years of elk hunting, I’ve only seen 3 of that caliber. The third was...
Ya that was part of my rational making the decision. My thought was to buy in on the ground floor, then see how the point creep & odds developed & possibly drop out. But after seeing how elk tags have gone nation wide, glad I bought in. You are correct. If I had a point less, I’d drop out.
I don't take quartering towards shots, or any marginal for any reason. Second bull was especially frustrating as he was standing still just 40 yards from me, twice. But I could not try that shot. Seen the results of such shots that others took. Tracked forever with no recovery. No regrets...
When they did that I debated adding all the extra apps to my deer points, as I figured I’d never get to use them. To my surprise 15 years later, it looks like I’ll actually get an elk hunt out of that. Likely nothing special, but at least a decent elk hunt.
You’re not the guy from Idaho I helped on that hunt, are you? I drew that tag in 2007, and shot my best bull 350+. Great hunt now with the worst odds in NV lol. Later helped a guy to a 399. I passed on a couple borderline 400’s. Awesome just to see.
My plate is now full after hitting in Utah & two slammer Midwest draws. Would be happy just stacking points in Nevada. Prefer to focus on what I have rather than plan a combo hunt. At 65 with two torn Achilles & heart failure, I need to allocate my energy. Would rather see fellow Hunt Talkers...
It’s official. Waited a long time for this. Door knobs & public places are strictly taboo starting 7/15. Not getting screwed again by some jackass dragging their sick kids around town spreading their love. One OIL tag pissed away is enuf.
