I've had a walk in for 20+ years. In my opinion, anything more than a week is too long as you get a bunch of wasted dried crust on the outside that has to be trimmed off and discarded. A couple days is plenty long enough. You just need it too cool thoroughly and stiffen up for butchering.

I'm in similar situation living at about 700'.
I always drive out west on hunts and take my time. You are gradually going uphill the entire trip west, spend first night somewhere mid way at a couple thousand feet, then next night pretty near your destination at 5-6000' or greater, then one...

Silly not to protect it, why take a chance?
I'd cover the area inside walls over footings with insulated blankets. Just buy a few, they're not that expensive and you don't need many.
Straw makes one heck of a mess to clean up.
I've fished quite a few places in southern IL that have public land adjacent the water.
Seems like boating into some of these harder to access places could get you into some good hunting.
Toughest thing about any midwest hunting is getting good property to hunt. Then it usually takes a couple years to figure out the best stand locations, wind directions, etc.
I own a couple farms and lease some ground in southern IL and have hunted the area for over 25 years. There is pretty...
My Radrover says I can get 30-35 miles out of it too, but it starts getting pretty tired and about out of juice at 20.
