Every deer will be at least more difficult to kill in October than November. As far as bucks, it’s actually beneficial that more guys would be willing to blast the first spike or forky. Right now, I feel like people tend to really cherry pick and hammer the 2 year old nice up and comers over the...
There will be pressure. The only way to really minimize pressure on mule deer here would be to go LE everywhere. But we don’t want to do that yet. At least it would likely result in lower success rates since guys that don’t even know how to tie their own shoes can’t blast forky with its nose up...
I don’t really see any bad points. If anything, it could provide even less opportunity given the state of herds in both species for the majority of the state. It’s a really nice compromise of opportunity for hunters, potentially spreading out pressure, and giving deer herds more of a fighting...
As the season is now, the guy from Dillon mentioned in the example could take his family out east for 3 days, shoot their 3 young bucks in eastern MT rutting within a mile of the road too. It can go either way. With a pick your region and species with the season structure mentioned, I think it...
As hilarious and ridiculous as this is, it shows how many people either don’t understand the effect we’re having on the resources as hunters and that many flat out don’t care about it as long as they get all the opportunity they want.
It was a fun hunt and I enjoyed spending time in that country. That being said, it is far from a trophy unit, and it has gone downhill as far as quality since I was there in 2018. Enjoy the country and have realistic expectations.
It spreads out pressure at least to some degree. Also, if you have more archery only guys, there should be less deer being taken(archery success rates are generally much lower) while still providing ample hunting opportunity for everyone.
I agree with you. I’m not trying to make more opportunity for bow hunters. There’s plenty. Just trying to come up with ideas to spread out pressure and make season structure changes work. Maybe it’s a dumb idea. Was just a thought.
Realistically, for those concerned about losing archery time for deer, you could move the start of the archery season a week or even two back into august. Other states do it. Bow hunters could get a week or two before upland bird hunting pressure starts as a bonus as well. That could allow for...
For the big proponents of unlimited mule deer rut hunting, I’d say they want to kill a mule deer buck and not have to work very hard to do it, but I doubt any would admit that.
I also love hunting rutting muleys but understand it’s not realistic for healthy populations unless very limited in...
Haha! I definitely get why people wouldn’t want to shoot a zebra. I hunted Africa in 2012 and would easily take western big game over it any day. That being said, zebra were by far the most cagey animal I hunted there and the most fun, and a mature stallion was as spooky and challenging as any...
Wild hogs are about the only thing that comes to mind. I’ve killed turkeys but they don’t do anything for me. Other than that, I just love to hunt so pretty much anything is fair game.
We certainly have our share of issues with resident hunters. I’m hopeful this will be a good committee of conservation minded resident hunters. From what I’ve seen as far as non resident hunters in eastern MT, I wouldn’t say the rest of the country has much to brag about either. Lol
