    Montana 2024 regulation change

I hunt huns and sharptails which open Sept 1, not just forest grouse in the mountains.

    Grouse! Let’s See Them

Due to low human hunting pressure, grouse tend to be fairly tame in parts of Alaska. Interior has sharptails, ruffed and spruce grouse. Southeast Alaska has sooty grouse in the coastal rain forest. The season is Aug 10 - March 31.

    Football General Talk

The Cowboys and Lakers are similar in that they can win impressively and then get blown out unexpectedly.

    Glass bedding over-under shotguns

I have a friend who specializes in fine stocks. He always glass-beds over unders. Last year I met up with him in eastern Montana for our annual hunt. He looked at my 40 year old Citori and told me I should have it bedded. I did not. The next month I slipped on ice and cracked the stock exactly...

Waterfowl ID - This one has me stumped!

My guess is a domestic variety or hybrid. No well-defined speculum. A Mule Duck is a Mallard x Muscovy Duck

    Waterfowl, let’s see them!

Final bird of the 2023-24 season which ended 12-Jan-2024 here in Montana. I shot more geese than ducks and more pheasants than anything. Pup got to hunt 51 times (retired and living the dream). Zero lost birds this past season which always my goal.

Grip and Grin Pictures I don't really care for.....

I shot this ram when he was bedded...bullet exited and hit rocks resulting in "ram grenade" look.

    Solo hunting

The final rooster of the year solo hunting. This rooster saw me and the lab as he was on an abandoned railroad grade. He flushed at over 200 yards and flew across an entire section. I knew there was a grazed out pasture at the section line. So we hustled the mile and immediately pup pup in a...

    This

Our Alaska house was built in the 1980s. New septic tank, new boiler, new roof, new wood stove downstairs. We put it on the market to sell. Inspection revealed new leach field required, new wood stove and pipe upstairs required, new boiler exhaust pipe required, etc.

    Solo hunting

Solo hunting ptarmigan in Alaska is also a function of miles covered. My strategy is to let the lab hunt out of range (100-200 yards) until the dog gets birdy. Then whistle sit the dog and move in to find those white chickens. Ptarmigan are typically low flushers which I do not...

    How cold at your place?

Not bad because little wind. Reminds me of Fairbanks cold snaps. Tough on equipment though.

    Solo hunting

When hunting AK ptarmigan or MT huns solo, covey flushes are a functions of miles covered in big country. I hunt my lab way out of gun range...about 150-200 yards and let her hunt. When she gets birdy, I stop here silently with the vibration on the ecollar and circle in for the covey flush.

    Upland 20 gauge recommendations

One thing I do not like about CZ is that CZ does not include or sell spacers to adjust the length of pull. Winchester SX4 comes with spacers as well as a compact youth model so length of pull can be modified easily.

    Upland 20 gauge recommendations

Have you considered the Winchester SX4? It comes with spacers to adjust the Length of Pull. Very durable and dependent. There is also a compact model with a short 13 inch Length of Pull as well as a left handed model. compact model link I've shot hundreds of rounds in my SX4 and never had a problem.

    The cold 🥶 is coming

I am not bothered by cold, but wind.... temperature in western MT this morning is -12F (not bad) but the wind chill is -33F. High winds make snow plowing challenging...seems like I have to start all over again after completing plowing the driveway.

    Solo hunting

Another strategy that has worked well for me is solo hunting down canyons. I start by climbing up out of view of a cattail canyon up to the top then cross over to canyon and put the lab in cattails and push roosters towards the bottom. Most hunters would start at the bottom only to have the...

    Lost birds

Divers are difficult, they dive never to be seen again. Puddlers are different...here is my pup's first blind retrieve on a puddler which she recovered after about 10 minutes.

    Lost birds

One thing I strive for is minimal loss of cripples. 2023 was a great year for me...zero lost birds. Got to hunt my pup 46 times, starting in September on MT grouse in the high country, then mostly wild MT roosters and ending with huns. Lots of memorable retrieves.
