Never stayed within 50 miles of a hotel out there. We still have lots of company where ever we end up camping. Plan on having backup camping spots in case others are full. Always a fun time though, even if it's crowded.
And that is why I don't hunt around Bozeman anymore. You can be the first person there but somebody will always show up late, not caring about you and spoil your hunt.
I hunt with the same friends for three months. I always have extra meat so every Friday i make a crockpot of game meat to eat once we set up camp. I have breakfast burritos premade for mornings and supply one other meal of game meat during the trip. I have hunted with these guys for many years...
If they are starting to rut in your area, they can travel widely looking for hot does. The smaller bucks might keep does around them, but I find the truly big bucks roam by themselves and just take the hot does and chase off the herd buck.
We drive around till we find a good area with lots of track. Then head up higher and look for them heading towards their bedding area. No use hiking if there is no deer.
The tops of the gravelly have been covered in snow for three straight weeks now. I have been able to get everywhere I tried. I can't imagine that with all the people up there that we won't be able to get in. Worse comes to worse park low and walk in.
I have lived around Bozeman for 20 plus years. I typically drive 1 to 2 hours to go hunting. I know of several great spots closer to town. The problem is, so does everyone else. I find it better to travel just a little further and the number of hunters goes way down. Bozeman people are super...
Unsuccessful in my A tag for the second year in a row, oddly four of my friends didn't draw in that same area with a 46% draw rate. But got my B tag so I am sure antelope will be on the menu this year.
Got a email from Chris this week. He said he personally walked the lines and painted all the orange posts back to blue for state land, took down the signs and gave the leasee a verbal and written warning along with the ramifications of future illegal signage. I know its just a slap on the wrist...
I talked to Chris at the Miles City Mt dnrc. Really nice guy who said they would look into the problem and report back to me with updates as they happened and what they find. Great to hear they were genuinely interested.
If the area is close we hunt the same spot on a rotation of 2 weekends in the prime spot and then 1 weekend somewhere else. It helps to keep the interest up and starve off the boredom of hunting the same spot all the time.
Stick with it and it will all come together. I have killed plenty of elk before but a lot of it was pure luck. I got to hunt this bull for six weekends off and on during bow season and saw him most days. I learned a lot by watching the elk and some days not trying to get on them because the wind...
Never seen a sheriff in the ten years i have hunted there. The cattle company is a rather big one for the area and no way am I asking to hunt on "my land". Everyone i talked too just went over the fence and really didn't care that is was posted. I did notice they didn't sign the areas by the...
I am sure they leased the state land to run their cattle on but every map including national forest at their office and onx show it as state land. I have seen signs that limit entry in agricultural fields but nothing like this in the mountains. Just looking to see who i can report this to.
I came across two different sections of state land that had signs saying posted no trespassing, no hunting, no fishing while next to the Custer national forest in Montana with the owners name on it. They also had the fence posts painted orange. I checked with the Custer national forest office in...
