I am not regretting the opportunity to finally hunt this area for deer. Been wanting to give it a go for a long time. Probably should of waited with all the points I had for a better area but I am not getting any younger and those mountains can get pretty steep. I usually get out every weekend...
That’s not what I wanted to hear but it will still be an experience. Last time I was in there 5 years ago for an elk hunt we saw some 150” main frame bucks with some extra cheaters. Hopefully I can atleast find a unique buck.
Access isn’t an issue. I have a few places lined up already. More wondering what elevation range I should be looking at for early season and if there are still some nice 170” bucks hanging around. A friend had this guy hanging around this winter.
I have grown up in the gallatin valley. My hunting partner and I have decided to go all in on the Bridgers this year. We usually hunt in SE Montana for deer. With the harsh winter and dwindling numbers, we decided to take a break and hunt close to home. I know this isn’t the tag it was growing...
Ditto what most have said. Great bullet for deer where penetration isn't any issue, drt results. Elk, no way. I would pick a tougher bullet. Love the terminal ascents or accubonds. Why limit yourself to a broadside shot?
I have been running toyo ct lately. Holds up good with the camper and hasn't chunked out on the dirt roads. Usually have a truck camper and pull a sxs trailer. Been much better than the Bfg all terrain diesel truck version or duratracks I have ran previously.
I have used the Sitka mountains for the last few years. No problems. Love the knee pads for antelope in the cactus. Tried the kuiu axis and attacks this year. Also liked both. Couldn't pick between the three of you forced me besides the axis being a more heavier weight. I bought all three in...
I have a fierce with 1/8 twist. I shoots 180 vld great. Tried also 168 vids and 175 blue box federal and 150 norma sp. All shot good. Never tried lighter than that. Loaded up some 175 eldx. Hoping they shot good also. I would start with 160 grn bullets and work up
We got about 24" in sw montana today. We might see a bear before the season closes! First time I didn't get to go fish the Missouri in march. Can't wait for spring to finally get here
I really like the sako actions. Put it in a good vertical grip carbon fiber stock with an adjustable trigger and add and a 24" fluted barrel with an extend coal mag for heavy for caliber bullets to seat them out further. Not a whole lot on the market in that configeration. I would skip the...
Another savage 93 fan. Picked it up with a wood stock, bull barrel and scope for $199. Didn't need one. I already own a few 22 lr's but couldnt pass up the gun at the price. Since owning it, I haven't shot the 22's now for years. The 17 is just a sweet little cartridge. No kick, accurate, flat...
My hunting partner and I run them. I can't imagine going back to a different bag. So easy to load up meat on the shelf without using the bag. Have another friend with a stone glacier. Way to many straps, and he can never seen to load his shelf right. I think the Marshall is a little heavier than...
Sometimes if the bullet doesnt exit you won't have a blood trail if the entrance is in a fatty area that can seal the entrance hole. Shot a cow a few weeks ago that bled good for 1/4 mile than nothing. Followed the tracks for a bit and restarted bleeding again after another 1/4 mile. I think the...
Gotta say I've always been interested in falconary. Never had the time but fun hearing the commitment and rewards it involves. Keep up the posts please!
We skip opening weekend and hunt the week before general deer rifle. We hunt in an area that is well known for its antelope and seems to have no shortage of hunters. Get up as high as you can early in the morning and glass. I won't put on a stock unless you can't see the antelope from the road...
Do you need one, no. Should you have one, yes. I've had November hunts in the 70's and I have had September hunts in the the 0's. It all depends on the weather. If you are going no matter what, get a 4 season tent and be done with it. I, like most people I think have more than one tent. I have a...
What elevation are you guys typically looking for bears right now in sw montana? I took a hike Saturday to about 7600'. I was starting to hit some knee high snow so I figured I was too high. Seen lots of animals including some just born mountain goat kids but zero bear sign.
Always unloaded. And everyone that wants to hunt with me unloaded too. We hike a lot of miles a day 10+ and you never know when the safety gets snagged on your pack and then later a branch gets in the trigger guard. I have been around twice when that has happened. Once was more than enough. We...
