The elk head didn't have the antlers cut off. That's just how they look after they have shed their antlers. Awesome find on the knife. Good luck on the rest of your hunt.
Another weekend, another hunt. We got up too late to hunt Friday and realized we couldn’t make it to our designated camp site because of all the snow. I mean we could have chained up all four tires and easily made it. But there was several spots with decent views to look at with the last hour of...
xtherm all the way, night and day difference over my old ba insulated pad, yes a little more noisy but I never hear it while I am asleep and not shivering.
Made it up today. Day started getting stuck in a rut before daylight and had to chain up to get in. Facts of life driving a four door diesel long bed pick up truck. Decided to hit my favorite glassing point when the rut starts to heat up. Made it to the trailhead just at shooting light. We...
I swear I had intentions to go deer hunting! I got a call from my hunting partner Friday that was already in the mountains and sitting on 4 bull elk in a very good spot to hunt. Well, I guess we are going elk hunting. Friday was my birthday so I got to camp, set up the spotter, watched the elk...
Second weekend of antelope we saw a lot less people. In fact we only saw one other camper and he was bird hunting. Saturday morning brought in cold temps (24 degrees) and horrible fog.
It was not till 10 am that we could actually see far enough to hunt. Luckily, nobody else was around and once...
Spent a couple weekends chasing antelope in the eastern prairies. I always enjoy my time out there with the great sunrises and sunsets. The hunting is just a bonus. Ended up finding a great buck on Friday before the season opened. He was wide and had decent cutters.
We drove around a bit more...
Made a quick overnighter for week 5. My hunting partner took the whole week off to chase elk. Just a little jealous. I headed up to where I normally elk hunt for rifle to check out the conditions and see if anything is showing up yet. Ran into one hunter lower down that said the elk have been...
Deer hunting is about what I thought bow season would be. Seeing lots of does down low on public but all the bucks up high in the alpine terrain have been small. I have some info on where the big boys are hanging out but not in a bow friendly spot. You can find them at first light but bed in the...
Week four. Started out pretty wet Friday night. Didn’t get out early enough to put a hunt in. Just enough time to set up a truck camp tent for the weekend. I figured it wasn’t worth it with all the rain we got to backpack in. We tried a different spot higher on the mountain so we didn’t need to...
I have found that old abandoned roads make awesome flat spots. We usually set up in the edge of new growth over a clear cut area to provide a good glassing point at first light and the trees provide shelter and shade in the afternoon. It took a few times of trial and error to get the pitch...
Week three. Got on Friday night and seen some whitetail and mule deer does. Later after gaining some elevation we found a big herd of elk hanging around the private line. Made camp 3/4 of a mile away above and out of the wind from them. It’s hard sleeping with those bulls going crazy all night...
Finally got to spend some nights in the mountains. Went up high in some upper basins looking for the elusive mule deer. Ended up seeing more mountain goats than anything. Area had lots of water, feed, and cover. Didn’t see a single sign of man once we got out of the creek bottom, a rarity it...
I can load or unload my slide in camper in about 15 minutes by myself.I have a 2018 ram 3500 srw diesel with a lance 8’6” lance. I have taken it rock crawling over mountain passes that sxs’s looked at me weird. Just go slow! Never felt like it was going to tip over. Just need to worry about...
I have had the elk hunters, quarry, pronghorn, vitals and a couple of pairs of older boots I don’t remember. I thought i loved the elk hunters till I started running the Schnees bear tooth. No comparison. The beartooths are a lot more rigid shank that helps while side hilling.
I don’t have a problem eating the tag if I can find an elk at some point. I have always been able to pull out an elk out of there when I needed one. I figure I’ll spend over 30 days hunting the unit. I hunt every weekend after Labor Day till thanksgiving. Already have 10 days off to hunt the rut...
That’s the type I am looking for. Not a monster but a good buck with some small trash, mass and decent width. I would be happy to find something similar. Kind of looks like a buck I saw in 2020, the last time I was in there around thanksgiving. Found a couple good spots up high that look...
Not my style, I know of areas I could make this happen. I want a back country type hunt. It might not boil down to that but that is what I am going gunning for. Lots of time and to make this into what I want it to be. Hopefully I can make it worthwhile.
They do have a new edition of mission released this summer. I found a good deal on some last summer. I bought 6 Different pairs. They all seem to be working good for me. I have been running the higher end danners before. The danners worked ok. They don't have the rigid shank like the schnees...
