Yes, archery deer in the eastern part is all controlled. Elk was proposed last year but postponed, as WapitiBob describes it’s up for review this year with proposals for the 2022 season.
True, but on most hunt codes your NR odds are basically 0 until you are in the PP pool. Hunts with >1000 tags is where NR odds aren’t awful looking. Take a look at the draw reports. It’s bleak
You are correct - some are "controlled hunts", but the majority of the E OR archery elk units are still general in 2021. As other have noted, you need a NR hunting license and the general archery elk tag. There are several large wilderness areas where you could put your llamas to use and find...
You beat me to this gem. Apparently they had eaten all of the wolf meat and there was some buck meat the outfitter packed out for them. I think they were stuck almost a week past when they were supposed to be packed out. 4-5' of snow will do that...
My own. I've been butchering deer since age 10. One time both my wife and I shot elk on the same hunt, and it felt like the never ending meat pile... otherwise I generally enjoy it.
Pros: quality control, yield, $ savings, flexibility in determining cuts, letting your kid draw on the freezer...
The deer in the picture is in WI, where shooting an albino or all white deer is NOT legal. I grew up in this area and have seen a handful of them over the years. They appear to be more prevalent in this particular area than anywhere else in the state probably. The local sports shop has a dandy...
X2 for keeping an eye on Rokslide. I ended up buying my SG solo new cause I wanted the differentially cut spotter pocket. Got it through goHunt for 10% off and free shipping offer. not a huge savings.
Thanks for the info. I'm more into your style of hunting. I try to minimize my time in rotary wing aircraft, plus I assume the $/hr is similar to the US. That's a lot of Speights!
Cool photos. A DIY tahr hunt is high on my list. I too was there in college (1999) on a study abroad in Australia. Spent 2 weeks fishing and hiking the S Island. I'm in better hiking shape now I think, so it's not too late. But need to do it soon....
Also, elk may still be bugling those first couple days of 1st rifle. I bugled one in for my wife a few years ago on opening day afternoon. They seem to quiet down after a few days of rifle shots and getting bumped. So you may be able to locate something a day or two beforehand if you can scout...
It's possible. Elk are pretty aware of human pressure and adjust their movement accordingly (this is corroborated by GPS location data). If its somewhere they really want to be, then they may slide back into the areas they were in early archery. I used to hunt near unit 14 and this was the case...
Seriously right on! Pretty much my main struggle with archery elk hunting. Too much time deliberating has cost me shot opportunities.
Agree that it is likely some function of experience, as I don't have such a rough time hunting mountain turkeys in similar country. But I will admit I do have a...
These are only 'ok' tires IMO. I've had 4 punctures in <2 years on the stock GY Kevlars. Presumably from driving USFS roads, which is what I do when off pavement. All vehicle legal roads on the MVUM.
