@Mica Man, been jealous of your mixed bags. We (dog and I) had ourselves a memorable day. Had two spots to check out, one is more grouse habitat and the other more pheasant habitat. Ended up with 4 birds, 3 species. And the ruffed grouse has that rufous red neck like Brent's!
I should...
I use a big fat chopper mitten on my left hand with a chemical warmer in it. That hand stays warm. I have stopped toting my 12ga 870 in favor of a much lighter gun because I find in late season a comfortable 1 hand carry is much easier with a lighter gun, and I can put free ungloved hand in a...
When I was a kid, I remember opening an early season rooster crop stuffed full of grasshoppers. From my reading (of hunting books) I was under the impression they pretty much ate ag crops and seeds. I was amazed.
I had lots of acorns in ruffle crops this year so far.
Fun/Funny thread. I had a small tear in my vestibule of my rain fly for a few years. My hunting partner tried to exit the tent but instead of going through the open part, smashed his head right through the small tear and just kept going. So he basically shanked the tent with his big cute head...
Update: This fall is going great. I have two whitetail does down with archery in as many sits in the stand. I will continue to bowhunt now and then, but the main grocery shopping goal is complete. Had some great ruffed grouse and woodcock hunts this fall, and been pheasant hunting once, and had...
What’s the choke on that? For those with experience, what’s a reasonable range limit to shoot a stationary grouse with 410?
And how about you turkey slayers using tungsten? How far are reasonable limits on that?
My 2 cents- if you're hoping to opportunistically shoot grouse out of trees/ground pound on a hike or whatever, a 410 is perfect for that- great for headshots w/out much meat loss. If you're doing a lot of wing shooting for forest grouse (like out there flushing them with a dog)- they are hard...
I come from a non-hunting family and my first deer hunt was with a college friends family deer camp. I borrowed his fathers (and my deer hunting mentor's) Remington 760 30-06 and got my first few deer with it, before I purchased my own rifle. He has passed, and if that family ever chooses to...
I no way trying to dissuade a 410. Get one. But for next time you shoot the cricket try one of those slip on recoil pads that you can put foam inserts in. You can probably get it closer to an adult size length of pull with those. Maybe you’ll shoot it better?
Also the break action single shot...
Damnit you guys. I just ordered the final rise (10x what my last vest cost, granted that one was 15 years ago) and will soon have a vest that rivals my shotgun in value. But I guess I asked for it by starting this thread. I both feel really excited and dirty all at once. I was talking about how...
I’ve only encountered them on late season pheasant hunts (cause that’s the only time I’ve hunted prairie grouse habitat) and indeed they’ve always been waaaaayy out there. Maybe some year when it’s a cool early season we will try it. My dog would cook in 5 minutes with the temps that started...
100% agree, and it’s not like I’d sit at home and live out of my garden if I didn’t hunt and I would still travel, so really it might be a wash. And all the industrial food travels to us anyways. But still I think we tend to overestimate how sustainable hunting is when there’s substantial travel...
Not to go too far off point, but the environmental sustainability of hunting is very context dependent and I think we have a tendency to overestimate it. Shot a deer on the back 40? Pretty outstanding way to get meat, environmentally speaking. Flew to Alaska to get a 30lbs of Sitka deer meat or...
