So one of my previous jobs was as a Park Ranger in the Front Range mountains of Colorado. One day I was checking some "designated" but dispersed campsites in the Roosevelt National Forest. They were free and first come first serve but had metal fire rings and were commonly trashed by people...
So you may have heard that Elk, when bedding down will often do a big loop or "J" shape pattern. I've experienced this tracking Elk in fresh snow, and have heard this maneuver may be to smell if they are being followed as the scent of something behind them would come back uphill to them via...
Llamas in pastures have been preyed upon plenty by Mountain Lions (see @Sytes post above) so I don't think a lion would have a problem eating one that's tied up in the mountains if it really wanted to. If someone owns Llamas in cat country, those Llamas are going to be observed by the local...
I've done all my own the last 5 years or so. It just took the better part of 2 days to do my Elk last week and I always forget how much work it is. Just get a vacuum sealer, grinder, and go. Last year I purchased a box of pre-ground pork fat that came from a local farm for all my burger. I...
I leave Llamas picketed frequently while out hunting, and I do worry about Mountain Lions from time to time I guess. If you were to lose a rental animal to a predator though, I would imagine you as the renter would still be on the hook for the loss?
This should be your strategy regardless of the moon. Mid-day, you could nap or go back to camp but you might miss that bull that gets up out of his bed around noon and moves around a little. Patience kills.
Congrats on the deer! Yeah that area is not much of a Wilderness experience. I lived in the foothills West of Boulder for over 10 years and never once had a problem with anti-hunter harassment. The locals all hate target shooters and transients though.
If your saying that the cost of renting Llamas vs the amount of work YOU still have to do makes it worth the extra money for a drop camp or horse pack out, I guess I have to agree. Especially if others can help share costs. I still think the typical rate for Llamas is pretty reasonable though...
Just read through this entire post, I am surprised at some of the pricing and the reactions to them. I definitely thought The Wilderness Ridge Llamas would cost more. I am a DIY Llama owner/trainer, with 6 total right now. At $100/Llama per day, the price seems extremely reasonable if hunting...
I'll add to look for any and all human access points. For example, I once scouted an area that I thought was very difficult to access only to have random hunters show up during the season. They weren't coming in the way I did which seemed like the most logical way. I eventually found a very...
Do you know if returned tags are entered into the draw similar to how they typically have been in the past leftover license system? So theoretically if someone waits until the last minute to apply for the secondary draw, will there be more tags to apply for?
Thanks for correction Oak...
I'm curious how others feel about this new opportunity for obtaining Colorado leftover tags. I like the idea better than the usual "Computer crashing/lines out the door of Bass Pro" that is typical on opening day of leftover tag sales. I am also less than excited by...
Some sheds and dead heads I have found are in great condition, especially as mentioned if they are in a shady protected area. Others have literally been chewed down the bases by critters, so it's very cool that his bull was in such great shape considering how much time had passed.
As far as...
That's certainly a consideration, but are there really that many more predators in the SW vs the NW that the discrepancy in the calf/cow ratio is nearly 20 less calves per 100 cows?
Of the short portion I watched, what stood out to me was that the calf/cow ratio Statewide Average is 37 to 100 which according to Andy Holland is the lowest calf/cow ratio that's yet to be recorded. The NW portion of the State has a remarkably better ratio than the SW so I'm really interested...
Like @buffybr mentioned, the USFS is likely not going to waste time on short sections of trails made by public users for hunting or game pack out type purposes. I didn't work directly for the FS, but was once tasked to deconstruct nearly 4 miles of illegally built mountain bike trails in the...
For one of my favorites I mix dehydrated refried beans, instant white rice, powdered cheddar cheese (Same stuff as in most box mac n cheese) and add dehydrated green chile bits. This all goes in either a Ziplock freezer bag or Packit Gourmet boil-in bag. I then fill a separate sandwich baggy...
Thanks for sharing. What exactly costs so much to conduct these surveys? This year I received a phone call and message from a CPW employee regarding the big game survey. Doing it that way seems like long division when you could be using a calculator, so I understand the need to take a small...
