Can you check areas a bit higher in elevation wherever you are? You mention checking places a mile from the road, can you go in another mile farther? It could make a big difference. -

If someone at onX could make a query search for all waypoints containing the word(s) kill, site, elk, down, shot, etc., they might get a decent idea of where animals are being killed in given areas. One of my favorite and most successful elk hunting locations requires me to camp about 100 yards from where I hunt it. It's a small canyon separated by a small but steep ridge so I literally wake up, get ready in the tent, and make a short steep climb every morning and I'm hunting the other side... -

There are places in Colorado that this could theoretically be done but so many logistical hurdles make it difficult or not worth it in general in my opinion. By the time fall rolls around most rivers in the state are about at their lowest flows before winter and many become unboatable to rafts... -

One piece of advice I have is to research the migration triggers for Mule Deer in that area. Some deer herds in Colorado migrate almost like clockwork regardless of weather, possibly due to the length of daylight or some other internal instinct that causes those deer to suddenly head for winter... -
Are 4 season tents needed for mid-season (October-early November)
I have always been ok in a 3 season tent, even into the late rifle seasons here in Colorado. There have been occasions when I have to wake up several times throughout the night and smack the snow off of the sides to keep it from getting too heavy, but it's not a very regular occurrence.- Nick_CO
