I almost get the feeling you aren't trolling...
Drop, drift, and impact velocity are the factors I look at first when bench racing loads, and they all come out dramatically in favor of the 243. I don't consider energy an important metric, but assuming appropriate bullets and loads, the 243...
Going into the den would be a game time call for me, cause if it went wrong it's sketchy territory (understatement), I'd have to be feeling it. Actually pulling the trigger might be too, just depending on the presentation.
No ethical issues here, I grew up on Corbett's stories of tracking big...
The sporter barrel is, in relative terms, FAR more vulnerable just as you suggest. I haven't done any calculations to show otherwise. However, I have torqued a few sporter barrels on a couple hundred times without issue. For what it's worth...
But...if you don't get enough torque it just slips, and you figure how to get more grip and tighten it up. Also, the vises I've used pivot enough to make good contact on a tapered barrel.
I was just curious as I've probably done it 100 times without issue, leaving the scope on the action and...
@neffa3
I'm not the world's expert but I know what you're looking at pretty well. I designed and sold my own barrel vise for a few years, and have changed barrels on rifles a LOT for a guy who isn't a gunsmith.
I don't have the inclination to write a guide start-to-finish, but if you want...
I believe exit pupil is a large factor but know it isn't the only factor. Ilya Koshkin seems pretty knowledgeable on the subject, he hangs out at the Hide and other places.
It's common for hunting scopes to have 40-42mm objectives as 9x optics or 15x optics. In that situation the eyebox is...
I certainly wouldn't be concerned.
I have truck camped to around -20F with a +15 degree rated bag - not recommended.
I've also been comfortable at -10F in a -10 degree rated bag (a Western Mountaineering one, which does make a difference vs most).
When you're at the truck, you've got...
When my kids start hunting, they'll be starting with a fast twist .22 of some variety. For factory options, I'd be looking at a 1-8 Tikka Lite in either 223 or 22-250. There's reasonable factory ammo available for the former, I would only consider the 22-250 if you hand load.
Of course, I...
I'd take:
Midas then Hopzone for IPA's
Single Hop then Prickly Pear for a little less hop
Cold Smoke or Mountain Man on occasion if straying from the usual
I have a couple my grandfather gave me that stay tucked away.
My kids (3&5) did a lemonade stand on the 4th and someone paid with one. Which certainly raised an eyebrow.
I am reminded of a saying of my friend Doug. "If money can fix it, it's not a problem."
The insurance can help protect your assets, but if you need to employ American martial arts to protect yourself or another, the assets should come second.
Beyond that, if mtmuley has gone as far as to talk...
When I started hunting Wyoming in 2009, I figured based on the draw odds at that time I could hunt deer and antelope in my chosen units 2 of 3 years, and bulls every other. No specials. That held for deer for a few years, but this year I just squeaked in with 5 points, who knows when I might...
My F150 was a 2001 with the 4.6, bought at 32k, sold around 200k. The most costly repair by far was a clutch for $1,000 at around 100k. It did have its share of little issues. It got regular oil changes and not much else. Very different equipment from most of the discussion. For perspective...
Pricing for things is interesting. I paid 13.5k for a 2001 F150...in 2003 with 32k and a little warranty left. Sold it in 2017 IIRC with ~ 200k, pretty much only changed wear parts, clutch-starter-alternator-ball joints-u joints-breaks-tires-wind shield. 4x4 and extended cab, manual almost...
