I've done a few guided hunts in my day. All but one were pretty poor experiences.
On one, we went with and paid full price for "the nicest Alaskan moose guide out there." A little tough as an NR to coordinate all those logistics and it was my first big game hunt in Alaska, so we went for it...
Flew in with them in AUG19. Owner was a bit curt, but got the job done fine. I'm a commercial pilot, and can say that our pilot got us in and out in some pretty demanding conditions that took a good degree of skill. My buddy and I both killed Caribou, but the group after us had a pretty wild...
Yeah probably. I'm a "300 yards and in" kinda dude though, so I wouldn't have much to gain from more velocity other than shorter barrel life. That 120 doing ~2700 impact velocity should be a hell of a package, hopefully testing it out on Kodiak next month if things go well
A lot of my rifles like the E tips as they're configured in factory ammo, whatever that is. Very boringly consistent terminal performance, too... have been very pleased with their results on Caribou, Pronghorn and Whitetail
Mine's into Varget too. Just wish that stuff weren't unobtanium right now
42.5 grains Varget
120 Hammer Hunter
Fed 210M primer
2.79 COAL
2900 FPS
Those Hammers let you bump things up quite a bit before encountering pressure- I could probably squeeze another 100 FPS out of that one. Pretty much...
Spot on here. Four out of four loads I've developed with the recommended powder/ bullet combination have given me MOA or better accuracy without changing anything. Go with what you find recommended by Steve on the hammer time forums and you'll be set.
Can someone help articulate why Idaho explicitly prohibits you from shooting your food with any substance other than one of the most widely studied carcinogens in the world? All onboard with the irons only etc, but that one seems silly.
Another Virginian here who would be totally fine with cuts to our resident deer tag allocations, and also happy to have more NRs hunting here. All the nonresident hunters I've met have been very friendly and respectful.
Just finished this one as well- really great read. Coincidentally, I also happened to draw an antelope tag in the region of WY that contains the battlefield, so that will be really cool to see even though it's not comparatively a very desirable tag.
Actually got me really interested to learn...
The other aspect of point creep to stress is unit selection. If you apply for a unit that takes *exactly* 4 points, there is a very good chance you will not get it, even if you pay twice as much for the special draw. Happened to me last year. With 4 points, you probably want to look at one...
Great job on cutting the Pepsi, that is a fantastic start. There is so much misinformation out there about nutrition it's a little bit hard to ascertain what is legitimate advice, but here's a start- quality has a quantity all its own. What I mean by that is, don't try to "eliminate carbs." If...
Good opinions above, but I'd emphasize that it depends on which propellant you're using. Using BH209, it's a safe bet you'll be good to go even a month or two later unless you get the powder actually wet. Other blackpowder substitutes are my hygroscopic (meaning that they attract and absorb...
Makes the ones you have all the more valuable, though. I'm 30 and just got out of the military, and am moving to Alaska as soon as humanly possible... this thread has been an incredible read, and a fantastic example of how having the temerity to follow your dreams can result in some really...
If you can find accommodations close to your hunt area, it's nice to have somewhere to unwind at the end of the day. I'll camp at a trailhead if it would be an hour or more drive every morning, but otherwise, I stay somewhere. Planning to stay in a hostel this fall in WY if I draw.
It is. I actually could have killed my bull with a compound, as mentioned above. There are also rivers that have some taller willows, which got probably 6' high in the area we hunted. If you look at those pictures closely, you can see that there are subtle topographical folds that can be used to...
Did the North Slope gig in '18. We had everything from 40 knot arctic gales to 70 and sunshine on the X, and ended up killing a nice bull at 40 yards. It's an extremely austere environment up there, but also very beautiful. Kind of like planet Mars. Lived in waders for six days, but evidently...
