Watching the current draw recap I actually didn’t realise non resident elk and deer allocation has moved from 35 to 25%. Will be interesting...
Welcome to the forum MrCarbine. While we (here in NZ) are behind you in these gun law changes we are slowing heading in the same direction.
On a more positive note, if you're looking to head over to the US to hunt I'm happy to help with advice if it might help.
I know what your mean about the Russian Roulette and logistics. I'm applying for my son for the second year in the WY draws. My son and I aren't really worried who has the tag so I apply for the both of us and as long as we draw something we are both happy. Might be different for us as we both...
I agree with Northwoods. Find things that interest him outdoors. My son is a motivated hunter but I'm sure a big part of his motivation is building a big fire at camp and telling campfire stories each night.
Yes, that’s my understanding you’ll need a permit to bring your rifle. I’ve heard they can take 4 months so recommend getting this done early. Also I believe you need a local contact added to the permit application.
I do use onx but mostly an app called NZ Topo50. This app gives you the public...
Calling is common on public land hunts.
I have used a cow horn and also an electronic caller (which has elk, red and sika deer calls), but now I just use a plastic Gatorade bottle with the end cut off :)
Yes, in general they have a lot of the same characteristics including the phases you mentioned.
The hunting techniques are also similar in terms of call in during the roar and then finding the solo stags feeding post roar or as you call it late season.
They also move up and down the landscape...
I'm finalizing my 2024 elk draw applications for my son. Planning to apply in a number of states including the youth draw in New Mexico. Seems like some great opportunities in NM and the dates work with his high school vacation dates. I see New Mexico has a youth guided draw, with better odds...
Going to be very interesting to see the odds for next year. My son and I will be trying our luck again for WY elk, and will apply for the western region. I had thought the general tag quota would be higher than previous years but the proposed quotes look lower.
Thanks. Yeah, excited to apply in WY next week! Ideally I’ll draw in WY but my son and I have a good number of points across the west so should draw something. If not then we will bear hunt with OTC tags.
It was awesome. Not sure it could have been any better! We both filled our tags. Planning a return trip and already booked plane tickets so now just need to draw some tags.
From now until mid June I’m hunting a lot (mainly high country deer and tahr) and will swim, bike and run to keep the fitness base from 2023. Although having covid has slowed me down over the last couple of weeks but the body is getting a rest! From June will get back into training for an event...
My son and I are planning a western hunt adventure for the first two weeks of Oct 2024. Our flights to SLC and Turo are already booked and now we just need to draw one of these tags:
- Arizona elk
- New Mexico elk (youth draw)
- Wyoming elk
- Wyoming pronghorn and deer (as a backup)
Completed a half Iron Man last week so fitness is currently good. Been eating non stop for 5 days and resting but dropping weight which has been interesting.
I'll carry my current fitness through summer and fall hunting (its the beginning of summer here).
My 2024 goal is to keep active and...
