I am fairly confident that there are a few mountains and maybe even a few smaller drainages in NW Montana that I have explored that rarely have anyone leaving boot prints, but maybe that is wishful thinking. If someone does go to those spots, I doubt they ever go back!
I was messing around in...
Nice pic. I must be one of those "higher ups" too.
By far one of the best things that most western states have going for them, are the opportunities that public lands provide to the majority of us that weren't born into or have enough wealth to access large swaths of private land. Bundy and...
Make sure you have all the paperwork and that it is filled out correctly. There was a wild game check station setup on the Canadian side of the border at Beaver Ck along the Alcan when we went through. We didn't have any problems, but they had confiscated a few bears including a griz, several...
Pretty sure it was this Declaration of Importatation or Exportation of Fish or Wildlife Form found on the FWS website. We stopped at the FWS office in Tok and had them fill it out and sign it.

I brought a whole boned out moose from Alaska through Canada and into Montana a couple years ago and at that point I don't think there was any limit on quantity of wild meat. I would be very surprised to hear if that has changed. We had to bring the paperwork inside along with the paperwork for...
Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. I had the opportunity to work on the elk calf mortality study done in the southern Bitterroot here in Montana. Here is a link to an article that does a decent job of explaining the study and results of the research...
I run into conflicts with outfitters/guides just about every spring and fall in my part of Montana. There are around 12 different outfitters that primarily hunt on Forest Service land in the county where I live. They are well know for excessively abusing their "user days" permitted by the Forest...
There was plenty of snow up where I was yesterday. There was a bear too. That frozen lake is about 5000'. Got to 120 yards from a nice brown colored bear but thankfully he busted us before a shot was taken. We really had no business being up in those cliffs while the rocks were wet with snowmelt...
No, I killed a ram a couple years ago so it will be another five years until I can go after Montana ram #3.
I don't think there have been any units with 2nd choice ewe tags available in a few (or more) years. Although, I did get a call in September two years ago from FWP with the opportunity to...
Went out again yesterday evening. There was way more snow in the bottom of the canyon than I have seen up there this time of year, and we had a few unpleasant miles of hiking in deep snow. Almost didn't go up into the slide I normally grass from due to the handful of avalanches we heard and saw...
A friend of mine came to visit today and wanted to see some bears, so I took him up to where I had seen the grizzlies yesterday. Sure enough the sow and cubs were in exactly the same spot and the big black bear was only a couple hundred yards away from where he had been the evening before. After...
Went up another of my early season spots late yesterday evening and spotted a nice black bear way up at the top. After I got tired of watching him, I moved a few hundred yards to look at some country a little further up the drainage and spotted a sow griz with two cubs. It is sure fun watching...
Went up to one of my early season spots for a quick look this evening and managed to glass up a couple. Neither of them got me too excited, but always nice to see the first bears of the season.
Had a bit of luck last week. I hadn't been to my favorite spot in a few years and unfortunately someone else had found it in the meantime. Thankfully my backup spots were better than ever.
