There was a podcast I listened to a few years ago, I think it was Dive Bomb, where they interviewed a Canadian guy who was present in a pit blind when one guy fatally shot and killed another guy in the pit. Scary stuff. Really made me rethink safety talks when hunting out of pit blinds with...
Exactly. No bird or any animal for that matter is worth the consequences that can occur if safety is not first and foremost. At the end of the day, if the bird gets away, who cares? There will be more opportunities. There is no taking back a fatal accident when it comes to guns and hunting. Like...
While I did not see a deer opening day, I did see a big six point bull elk with ivory tips standing on a BLM road about 20 min after a truck had gone past. Of course I didn’t have an OTC elk tag in my pocket as I’m still a NR this year and didn’t want to spend the money.
So this year I laid a an OnX track for every cover hunted so I could track time hunted and miles covered. Over 8 days, it was 43 hours of boots on the ground hunting and 66.3 miles covered.
Final total flush count numbers for 2023 (8 guys total):
Grouse flushed:288
Shot at: 85
Killed: 26
Woodcock flushed: 87
Shot at: 54
Killed: 23
We flushed a lot more grouse this year than years past but only managed to kill a few more. I’ll post the numbers for the last three years over the...
The end of grouse camp is always a little sad. I only see most of these guys for this single week a year. We look forward to it all year and then it comes and goes in a flash. I reckon that’s how all good hunting trips go. We had too much fun. We drank too much. God knows we ate too much...
Friday, 10-20-23, the official last day in grouse camp as the rest of the guys start driving home first thing Saturday morning, found my partner and I running into other hunters and finding coverts that didn’t look like what was expected based on maps. My partner and I didn’t flush a huge number...
Thursday, 10-19-23, was a tougher day in the woods with less flushes and I couldn’t kill a grouse to save my life but my hunting partner shot well and killed three.
Final flush count for the day for my partner and I:
Grouse flushed 17
Shot at 7
Killed 3
Woodcock flushed 2
Shot at 2
Killed 1
I had a good day Wednesday,
10-18-23, and managed to kill three grouse. We flushed a lot of grouse. Sometimes you can see the flushes a little better and luck goes a long way when it comes to grouse shooting. I also managed a single woodcock kill.
Flush count for Wednesday for my hunting...
Crops from ruffed grouse from our 2023 grouse camp in N WI. The biggest surprise to me was the amount of crops that were empty but the nuts and other critters are cool too.
Minutes after I wrote this, I found a tick embedded on my inner thigh. Had to remove him with a pair of tweezers and now I have a nasty welt on my thigh. Horrible things.
Much worse than the past years. I’d guess because no hard frost yet. We are pulling multiple ticks off each dog after every covert and a few off of us at the end of the day.
Another tough day. We moved birds but didn’t see most of the birds we flushed. I managed to kill a snowshoe hare that ran down the trail but that was the only blood in camp for the day. Some of the guys fished in the afternoon and slayed the crappies.
Final numbers for my hunting partner and I...
A tough day in the woods. We moved some birds but didn’t see many of the flushes we had. We also ran into a bunch of other hunters. There were already trucks parked at 3 separate covers we wanted to hunt which made for a frustrating morning. We saw license plates from Virginia, Georgia...
Another good day. Finally killed a grouse. Also limited out on woodcock. We got into them thick in the last covert we hit. And even helped an old local couple out road hunting for grouse change a flat tire.
Final numbers for the day for my hunting partner and I. We should have killed a few more...
