I have officially found the limit of the "Yeti Bro" culture for me......

A ship lost some cargo containers off of Washington State last fall. Apparently at least one was loaded with yeti coolers. I know of 6 found on the beach in my community. 12 off of Sitka. All different shape and sizes. I got two. The only way I’ll own one. They aren’t real easy to pack.

    Avoiding the High and Dry

Well a lot depends on your boat..or at least how heavy it is. I generally run a separate line to base of a Danforth anchor and take it to shore. Then I play out the amount of anchor line I think I will need to have the boat anchored off correctly and cleat that of too the front of the boat. Lay...

    Caribou Hunting Ban?

I’m also in the cue. Some very good articulate opposed testimony. Including some from rural Alaskans who live in the area. In a somewhat ironic twist my remote Alaska cell phone network keeps dropping me from the call.

    Caribou Hunting Ban?

Well as federally qualified subsistence user, who just spent $320 just to walk through the doors at Costco (discounted ticket), I’m not sure calling the proponents of this emergency closure selfish fX#!//s or applying appalling examples of rural hunter practices to the whole group (isn’t that...

Purchasing a Property North of Ketchikan

I don’t know anything specific about that area. I’d call both the ADF&G sport fish and wildlife area biologists. Ask them about opportunities. Then I’d call someone from the recreation department at USFS in Thorn Bay. Something to ask all three is about nearby salmon streams and what boating...

Alaska Draw Results - February 2021

Back to Kodiak for goat! Last time I hunted this tag I slept out on the mtn with a tarp over the cape for a pad. Until I got too nervous about bears (smelly). Then I stayed up till sunrise listening to podcasts figuring if I could understand, I wasn’t hypothermic. Good times.

    First hand Covid symptoms

Got my second moderna yesterday. Definitely some arm soreness last night. Woke up feeling pretty good but after a walk I feel pretty run down, achy, and lethargic. I actually tested positive (asymptotic) in October, so I was wondering if I would have a reaction.

How to defuse a grizzly encounter peacefully?

I have a lot of experience with bears as well--19 years working and recreating on salmon streams in remote Alaska, one of my worst encounters was in my front yard--and can add a couple things to the perspectives already shared. Almost every bad encounter I've had has involved surprising a bear...

If you can only do one.....

I agree with the above statement. The jet boat/canoe is underrated. It is slow but I've made some long upriver trips in a canoe after running out of jet water.

    Waders for SE AK?

I live in SEAK and i wear simms waders with stocking feet and synthetic waders boots all the time hunting. Always for moose, often for deer, this year i wore them on the first and last days of a goat hunt as we climbed up a stream. I think you could wear waders every day on a coastal black...

    Hunting Bucks In The Rainforest

Just watched them. The videos did a great job of showing fun and challenge of that type of blacktail hunting. As long as the occasional doe comes in, I can slip around in the Tongass for days enjoying myself the whole time. The guys hunting the beach can have it.

    '20- What Worked, What Didn't?

Worked Zero degree synthetic bag in the mtns. Had a trip in the Wrangells where if I had packed down, which I brought to the airstrip, I would have been in serious trouble. Stone glacier pack. I get a little frustrated with this pack sometimes—adjusting all the straps, not always sure I have it...

    Alaska newbie

If you are thinking about deer or bear in SE, I'd consider renting a Forest Service cabin for your first trip. They are not expensive and they give you a cushion when it comes to dealing with moisture, bears, etc. You can get flown or boated out to many of them. They do get hunted quite a bit...

making something from a goat cape?

So my taxidermist called with the sad news that the cape from last years goat wasn't mountable. When they got it back from the tannery one ear was falling apart. Otherwise it is in good shape. I don't see any sign of hair slipping. My question is does anybody have any ideas on some thing...

    Deer - lets see em

There is some magic in watching a Sitka materialize out of moss and fog in the rainforest.

HD 140 Goat Hunt done but not as I had hoped

It can be harder then it seems to tell them apart in the field. Goats live in a different world and few develop the kind of familiarity you get with other game species.

Alaska North Slope - Stove Fuel?

As i understand it those items are considered hazmat. They aren't illegal to fly with but it requires extra hoops for the air taxi. Some go through them. Some ignore them. Some won't let you fly with them. Best to just talk to your transporter about what they fly and be up front. An outfit...

How Heavy is Your 13 day Sheep Pack

Looks pretty good to me. Lots of solid advice here. I'd ditch the Nalgene in favor of two small plastic juice bottles. I drink more water when I have a small bottle handy in my pocket. Also if you are in your tent, it is pounding rain, everything is wet but you are basically dry....well it...
