Last season was my first. Shot a jake out of a blind over decoys on the first morning. I had an older fella calling for me and showing me the ropes. It was quite a goat rodeo of a bad hit, wrong shell size, chase the bird to finish it off scenario.
SO, first advice: always check the shell...
Just got out to check this camera. This buck was there a day after me.... by far the best buck I’ve got on camera. Hopefully I’ll catch up to him next year
I have a Model Seven chambered in 7mm-08 with an 18” barrel and a straight 4x scope. Was my first rifle and is a great gun to carry around in the timber.
Someone mentioned the model 99 in .300 savage... my old man has shot deer for 40 years with that gun, but I’d hate to lug that log around if...
I’m taking a ride to philly with a buddy who recently got into hunting. For $50 a piece it seemed like a good excuse to make a little road trip, drink some beers, and get excited for the upcoming hunting season.
That said, I’m a MeatEater fanboy
What part of upstate? A buddy and I are working on a western hunt plan for 2020 or 2021. Curious to see how your hunt goes and how the logistics play out!
I haven’t tried it, but it was one of the packs I was considering. Went with the sawtooth for the ability to pack out meat — some of the state land I hunt would be a pretty long, rugged drag. It can be a real pain in the tree though, especially when you need something from the bottom of the...
I picked up a lefty tikka t3x hunter in 30-06 last year and love it. Nice looking gun and a great shooter. Handled the savage and the fit wasn’t as comfortable for me.
Director of operations for a landscape design/build in NYC. Rooftop gardens, some interiors, a few commercial projects.
Looking forward to the day I’m out of the city full time. For now a cabin upstate does the trick.
Going to scout way more this year. Keeping cameras out for the full year and adding more as the year progresses. I plan on putting them higher in the trees to keep bears and people off them.
I’ll be picking up a lightweight stand and sticks to use as a mobile setup and put my other stands up...
I got the sawtooth for my first pack. I haven’t used it to pack meat out, but I have loaded it with a hang on stand and climbing sticks as well as enough gear for a full day hunt. Handled the weight well and is easy to keep organized. If you hunt whitetails, it’s great in the treestand, as well.
im in the Catskill park region. The public land was pretty busy but possible to get away from folks. the private around my cabin is all LI and NJ folks who get their shooting out on the opening weekend.
Our camp is in Stetson. It’s in unit 17 just outside of Bangor. Our schedules are pretty similar.
Hopefully we are both tagged out by thanksgiving morning! Best of luck to you guys.
