I was talking with a moose biologist who described them as generalists first, and specialists second.
I think what he meant was that they have an ability to adapt to a wide range of habitats, like what we’ve all seen them in above, but when they find an area with sufficient browse to sustain...
I’ll be off chasing Shiras in NW MT this year in a different environment to what I’m used to seeing moose in - less riparian habitat and more regenerating clearcuts. Will let you know what I see out there!
My understanding is that Shiras moose more often focus on riparian browse species like willow around water, rather than aquatic vegetation.
There does seem to be an association between aquatic vegetation and sodium hunger in moose too, and there’re some academic papers out there that have...
My wife drew a MT moose tag this year and we’ll be taking her .270 with 130gr ttsx - it’s been a great setup for elk, and looking forward to taking her first moose with it!
We've got a 14x16 Davis tent, and an 8-man Seek Outside teepee - we love both and have run them in all sorts of conditions without fail.
The only issue I'd echo about the teepee which has been covered extensively elsewhere is that you have to be particularly careful about how you pitch it in...
Counting down the days here!
Crossing fingers my wife and I draw bear tags on POW...and second-guessing the wisdom of even applying for a Raspberry Island bull tag!
Has anyone tried using a sous vide device to get all the flesh and connective tissue off? I saw a video WGFD posted using one but I’ve not come across the method otherwise.
Will definitely try that ammonia/acetone this year - that sounds great!
