Trust me, I've considered going DIY.
I'm just at the point where I'd rather pay to fast track any practical knowledge I can gain vs. trying to grind it out. If I spend 3 years doing DIY I'm almost at the cost of an outfitter - if I spend 3 years and have fewer than three encounters to show for...
Washington state.
Thats one of the reasons I'm hoping for some kind of referral. I've heard enough horror stories about the latter... spending 6-8k to be paired with a guide who never wants to leave camp and doesn't want to chase animals(aka you know, actual hunting) sounds like a waste of...
I'm starting my research now in order to hopefully get a guided hunt for next season. I've heard numerous times here and other places that getting a (good)guide can usually shortcut some of the learning process, answer a lot of questions and connect some dots a little faster than DIY. One of the...
Thank you for the insight - and I can completely understand not sharing info on spots that aren’t yours! I’ve had buddies get burned sharing their own spots with people they thought were cool only to find out they told their friends, who invited their friends, and next thing you know my buddy...
Nice to know. I noticed that in the regs because it’s usually billed as any weapon and outside of NF(or within one mile of private or something like that) I just didn’t know how much effect that has on the overall percentage.
I wish there was a way to exclude those in the harvest statistics - I...
Surely everyone’s heard about or experienced the fabled “beginners luck” at one point or another.
I was just reading a thread over in the elk forum that got me thinking about it. I’m not one who believes luck. I like to think there’s something logically explainable going on rather than some...
A couple salmon units, a lot of the beaverheads and brownlee all boast over 20% success which is initially why I was looking in that direction. However, I wonder how skewed it is with outfitters and private in some places you know? Talking to someone with some experience hunting the units prior...
I guess I should've mentioned some more stuff in my first post. Most of my hunting is in the alpine of the cascades for bear during the fall these days - trying to branch out and try some other stuff. I'd say the stuff I'm used to is fairly steep, but then again I'm not looking at packing a...
Current pack is a Stone Glacier. The lack of organization is annoying at times, but I suppose its the price you pay for lighter packs.
Tried Kuiu. Didn't like how flimsy it felt(it was an Ultra).
Eberlestock. Way too heavy, uncomfortable.
Seek Outside. Couldn't get it to carry weight well...
Never ends well when you're already imagining how those steaks are going to taste before your projectile of choice is on its way to the target.
Save the celebrating and planning for after the animal is down!
Planning on picking up an Idaho A tag and hunting archery this year. I’ve seen the idea that some zones are more “beginner” friendly but it’s mostly in older threads and not sure of the current relevance.
I had thought about Salmon or Beaverhead but at 12 hours away I think trying to go for a...
Hey guys -
I have some questions on specific areas around Missoula - would one of you who has experience hunting spring bears in the area be willing to shoot me a PM? I just want someone to run a game plan by and level my expectations.
Thanks in advance.
What I've learned from this thread is that every manufacturer has duds.
Everybody strokes on Tikka, but I've personally owned Tikkas that wouldn't shoot, and so have other people on this thread. I had a 6.5 that wouldn't shoot better than 1 1/2... sent that one up the road and bought another...
I think when people say the triggers suck they're not referring to the traditional "sucky" trigger - overtravel/creep/etc... they dislike them because they won't go down low enough. I had the same issue with mine, it wouldn't go below 3 pounds. A new spring from MCARBO fixed that.
Much like knowing where you stand, you also need to know where your rifle and scope stand.
If you took it somewhere to have it mounted and they goofed it up then thats one thing - but to expect it to be 100% after being shipped who knows how many miles... worse yet, expecting it to be dead on...
When I was in the same predicament... as in handling Christensen, etc... I ended up buying the regular LR stalker.
Its in 7mm, and it shoots pretty much whatever you put in it good. Sure, it has loads it likes more than others, but even garbage cheapo factory stuff shoots under 1.5.
One thing...
I'm not sure how you are with gear - I tend to flip rifles pretty quickly depending on if I really jive with them or not. If I really like them, they stick around and get hunted. I don't have any safe queens.
With that said, Savage rifles have by far the worst resale. I've had a couple for...
The people who change their mind every year are just people who are impulsive and attracted to shiny things. Most of the guys who have higher end packs/rifles/optics who buy new every year don't need to, they're doing it because they seen something shiny.
Also, its hard to apply the buy once...
